Students for Education Reform (SFER) seeks a motivated, driven, high-achieving professional with a collaborative attitude to join the Minnesota Team. The Organizing Fellow has an opportunity to gain valuable experience organizing communities to grow the membership base and build a strategic campaign plan.SFER develops young people and college students into grassroots organizers who have the tools to fight for education justice in their communities. SFER is a student movement that champions educational equity for all children, regardless of race or background. We understand our local school boards are influential partners in advancing our mission. SFER has a sister 501c4 organization, SFER Action Network, that recruits, endorses and campaigns for local school board candidates that reflect our values.Why work for SFER? [30%] Recruitment and Engagement.

  • Direct recruitment and engagement through tabling, one-on-one relational meetings, school and class visits, phone banking and network outreach.

  • Support turnout for actions and events by building relationships with student leaders.

  • Create regular email and text communications to keep list informed of opportunities and campaign activities

[30%] Campaign(s) Planning and Operations/Support.

  • Support campaign planning, execution, recruitment, and movement through the organizing cycle.

  • Identify opportunities to move campaigns forward

  • Attend local school board meetings and any related convening to campaign

[25%] Training and Development.

  • Support with planning and execution of trainings, action, and events.

  • Provide individual coaching to support movement on the Ladder of Engagement

  • Support with small team coaching/management.

[10%] Data/Database Entry and Management.

  • Input Data into Nationbuilder in a timely fashion.

  • Responsible for ensuring that data is up-to-date, and accurate.

[5%] National and HR Logistics.

  • Comply with HR policies and procedures.

  • Provide support on executing national organization initiatives and processes.

  • Contribute to national discussions, initiatives, and committees when possible.


Candidates need to have the following:

  • The desire to work hard, with passion and love, and a deep hunger for advancing social justice through organizing!

  • Demonstrate passion to work in partnership with young people

  • Demonstrated grassroots community organizing or campaign experience that includes at least one cycle of organizing

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders and communities

  • Collaborative work ethic and ability to work effectively across lines of difference

  • Ability to work autonomously as part of an innovative team

  • Ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively, including speaking in small and large group settings.

  • Complete alignment with SFER’s Mission, Statement of Beliefs, and Theory of Change

  • Ability to work evenings and some weekends.

  • Consistent access to a car and a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours that will include time outside of the traditional work day and weekends.

Nice to have:

  • Attended Minneapolis Public Schools or Saint Paul Public Schools

  • Education policy experience

  • Strong project management skills.
