Tell BPS and Mayor Walsh to Include the Community in Superintendent Search

With the resignation of Superintendent Tommy Chang and BPS being sued for allegedly providing a student’s information to immigration officials , the school board has an opportunity to restore the community’s confidence in a school district that is currently plagued with conflict.

The appointment of Laura Perille, head of the education nonprofit EdVestors as the interim superintendent, has caused resentment from the community, due to the "five day" selection process.

As the mayor and school board moves forward to select a permanent Superintendent, we need an inclusive transparent process in selecting the next leader that engages the community. Boston needs a superintendent who understands the complexities of educating 55,843 plus students, relentlessly addresses the achievement gap, respects the views of 10,255 of women and men who work in and out of the classroom, and builds a “culture of we” that is embraced by students, staff and community.
