NC Tuition Equity Campaign Team Huddle
We kicked off our campaign team last month and this is our second meeting. We are looking for students and community members who want to join our team to lead organizing efforts and an issue campaign for Tuition Equity! If you want to make a difference, develop your leadership, and take ACTION with a high energy and passionate group of young people please come out Saturday!
We are organizing Charlotte students (undocumented, DACA, TPS, SJIS) ages 16-26 from Charlotte, NC to pursue tuition equity by pressuring key Republican and Democrat state legislators to commit to passing a bill granting eligibility for in-state tuition to non- citizen students by Aug 1, 2018. We will do this by conducting 1 on 1s with impacted students, lobbying key legislators, a series of direct actions , and letters of support from community leaders, organizations, and businesses.
Thousands of undocumented students in North Carolina are prevented from continuing their education after high school each year. They are forced to pay out of state tuition, which is 4x higher than their in state peers to attend UNC System schools. These hardworking students who have grown up in North Carolina want to pursue their dreams and contribute to the NC economy, but they can’t access an affordable college education. Tuition equity would give in state tuition to undocumented North Carolinians.
Sign this petition and share with your network. Our goal is to collect 1,500 petitions from Charlotte students and community members to hand deliver to the NC General Assembly on opening day of the upcoming session May 16th. This petition is a part of a larger campaign that includes lobbying, direct actions, and community organizing. Sign up and we’ll keep you updated with local actions.
